Discrimination Case Checklist
Before you call, make sure you're prepared to answer the key questions we need to assess your claim.
✅ WHO discriminated against you?
Do you know their name, title, and / or role?
✅ WHAT happened?
Describe exactly what occurred, including what was said or done, in detail.
✅ WHERE did it happen?
Was it at / for work, in housing, at school, or elsewhere?
✅ WHEN did it happen?
Provide specific dates or a general time range — this affects legal deadlines.
✅ WHY do you believe it was discrimination?
What protected trait (e.g., race, sex, religion, disability) do you believe led to the discrimination? Was something said to you, were you treated differently than someone in a similar situation, or was there another clear sign?
✅ WITNESSES
Did anyone else see or hear what happened? Who can corroborate your story? Did you record it? Is there a papertrail?
Why This Matters
We want to help — but the law requires facts, not just feelings. Being part of a protected class isn’t enough. We must connect your experience to that protected trait and determine if the conduct rises to the level of illegal discrimination.
Want to Learn More About Discrimination?
Discrimination occurs when someone is treated unfairly or differently because of a legally protected characteristic — such as race, gender, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy status, and more. Below are some real-world examples of what may qualify as unlawful discrimination:
💼 Employment Discrimination
- 🟦 In the breakroom at work, your manager and coworkers regularly played TikToks that included racial slurs targeting your race.
- 🟦 You aren't being promoted because you are white and you have documents that only DEI candidates are getting promotions.
- 🟦 After maternity leave, you were told your job was eliminated — but a male employee was hired into your exact role.
🏠 Housing Discrimination
- 🟩 Your landlord refused to fix a leaking faucet unless you performed sexual acts. You have text messages to prove it.
- 🟩 A landlord denied your rental application after seeing you had a same-sex partner, even though the apartment was still available.
🎓 Education Discrimination
- 🟥 Your black child was suspended for behavior that white students weren’t disciplined for, and the school refused to address it.
- 🟥 A school ignored reasonable requests for learning accommodations despite a documented disability diagnosis and now your child's advancement in school is jeopardized.
🏪 Public Places Discrimination
- 🟨 You were denied service at a restaurant because you were wearing religious attire.
- 🟨 A retail worker followed you through the store because you are brown and accused you of stealing, while other white customers were ignored.
